Day Trip to Harbour Island: This is a do-it-yourself day trip. To get to Harbour Island, drive 45 minutes north from the Governors Harbour airport to the Three Islands Dock, then take a short water-taxi ride to Dunmore Town on Harbour Island. The taxis run continually and the fare is $5. Once on Harbour Island, rent a golf cart for about $40 for half a day and explore. Harbour Island has excellent shopping, many fine restaurants, celebrity sightings, and a long beautiful beach.

Exceptional Education Outreach (EEO): a public, non-profit special education and literacy project operating in the Bahamian Family Islands. EEO strives to provide special education and literacy outreach programs to students and their communities in Eleuthera and Harbour Island. We do this through direct service in schools, training programs for teachers and parents, and professional medical assistance to underserved students.
One Eleuthera Foundation (EOF): Works to strengthen organizations and partners throughout Eleuthera by connecting them to the resources they need to create positive and effective changes.
The Health Association of Central Eleuthera (H.A.C.E): Funds the sole ambulance that serves a 20-mile radius around Governors Harbour. It also sponsors the bi-annual blood drive and helps buy crucial supplies for the local medical clinics.

RENTAL CARS
Virtually everyone who comes to Eleuthera needs to rent a car. It is a long island with much to see and do, walking and biking on the main roads is dangerous, and if you want to see even some of the 135 beaches, go to the grocery store or to restaurants, you really need a car! Trust us…get a car. Actually, get an SUV, as the clearance is helpful on the rough beach roads.
There are no big car rental agencies on the island…basically, you rent a car from an individual. All of these cars are older and well-used. In fact, if you get one with less than 100,000 miles you are lucky. Prices are about $70/day ($60/day if you rent by the week). Jeeps are $10/day more and minivans are $20/day more.
Handy Tips: On the island, Jeep is a generic term used to describe all SUVs. If you want to rent a Jeep Wrangler, you need to be very specific about that.
In Eleuthera, rental cars have white or yellow license plates denoted with an “SD.” This means that you are in a legal rental car. We DO NOT recommend renting a car from a homeowner who does not have an SD car. You won’t have liability insurance and it is actually illegal for them to rent to you.
