We stayed one week in the Garden of Light and all the family really enjoyed it ! our kids (7, 11, 13) stayed downstairs while we stayed upstairs... Both the owner and the housekeeper are very accomodating and responsive. The house is very well equipped and offers a lot of 'accessory' amenities like beach chairs, beach toys, snorkeling gear... The gas BBQ was great also to grill fish, and the outside property is amazing. It seems you would like to stay everywhere at the same time (2 hammocks under palm trees). A charming small path reaches the beach which is very appropriate for kids because the water is not too deep at that point. The place is so quiet ! I would definitely recommend it ! We will surely be back !
We had a wonderful stay. The beach is about 100 yards from the main house and all the decks and platforms for sunbathing are very nice. The gardens surrounding the main house are very inviting. The guest house sits high atop a cliff with spectacular views. The people are so nice and helpful on the island, including our caretaker for the house. Eleuthera is a wonderful place.
We just returned from a week in Eleuthera & stayed at the Garden of Light house. There were going to be 5 in our party when we rented the house, then it turned out 2 were unable to come so it was just myself, my husband & our daughter. The house more than served our needs, and would have been just fine with all 5 as well. The property is in great shape, has been well maintained, and all the appliances as well as the pots and pans were top-notch. Beds were comfy. And there's a great double kayak (inflatable), snorkel gear, & bikes which looked brand-new.
The owner, Barbara, was a dream to deal with & responded quickly to all of our questions. The caretaker of the house was there to meet us at the airport & even gave us a little tour of Palmetto Point. He waited while we picked up some Kaliks, and then some basic supplies at the local store, before driving us up to the house. I don't think we would have found the house without him. The dirt road to the house was, at first, daunting, but all of the roads that lead to the beaches are primitive & you just take it slow. Having the SUV was a godsend as we were able to get to some fabulous beaches!
The beach at the house was stunning, as are all of the beaches in Eleuthera. It was too windy when we were there to swim at that beach but-- no problem-- we just drove across to the Caribbean side where the water is very shallow and calm, perfect for kids. The beach we were on is wonderful for walking, though, and having a drink or lunch under the palapa hut. And had we not had unusual weather (occasional showers, windy, overcast off and on) it would have been just fine for swimming-- but we enjoyed it anyway to the utmost. Having the SUV, though, allowed us to go exploring and we sought out a new beach every day, each one better than the next. It was nice coming home to the house at night ; very peaceful & quiet. You could hear the ocean & the stars were beautiful. Mornings on the upstairs deck sipping coffee were just great! It was slightly weird having 2 separate apartments for our family of 3, as we spent nights together downstairs then breakfast (and an occasional dinner) upstairs-- but it would be perfect for 2 couples or 2 small groups wanting privacy.
There are lots of great places to sit outside, which is where you'll spend most of your time. Our daughter loved reading a book while relaxing in the hammock! We had a wonderful time at the Garden of Light house & YES we'd recommend it!
We had come to love Eleuthera and we have enjoyed great success with Home Away and VRBO. Everything came together this time as well to make what was really the perfect trip!!!!! Barbara is the best owner we have ever dealt with! The best! Great, gracious and hepful person!
The property is the best of the bahamas in my opinion. The Atlantic side of the island offers a beautiful breeze most of the time. The beach, the water, the view are both stunning and private. The property is beautiful, clean, very well maintained, inside and out. Private decks everywhere - some obivously built strategically for sunrises or sunsets for example - all with a view!
Privacy and comfort for cozying up or reading a book on the beach, in the hammocks, or on the decks! Great kitchen facilities to eat at home and save some money.
Trails and back roads for walking, hiking or biking for those who need an adventure. Twenty more isolated pristine beaches within a short drive of the house to give you a little variety.
Del the caretaker - wonderful guy - knows the island and offers helpful insight like where to buy the catch of the day off the back of a native's boat!
As I said we loved Eleuthera and now that we found Monticello the love affair is complete! We are home!
Thanks very much Barbara for a spectacular vacation from our clan!
The house was everything that we wanted it to be. It was isolated but in the driving distance to Governor's Harbour at the same time. It was clean, comfortable, and well maintained. Wonderfully appointed kitchen, comfortable bedrooms and living area. The view from the deck made it the perfect place for meals or that morning cup of tea. The owner and the caretaker were a joy to deal with.
The peace, the solitude were so refreshing. My favourite part of the day was waking up every morning to the sounds of waves breaking on the beach and the birds starting their morning "concert". I would walk down the path leading to the beach and wait for the sun to greet me with its warm touch.
I think that single moment, in a sense, reminded me of my childhood when life was so simple and without any worries.
We had wonderful time and can not wait to come back next year.
What a wonderful vacation. The house and caretaker could not have been better, We had an awesome time. Eleuthera is beautiful and the house enhances the experience. It had everything you could need for a great vacation, including a beautiful beach right out the back door to the house. It is perfectly located to see all of the island, as it is close to Governors. It was great for our 2 kids, as they loved staying there. I hate letting the cat out of the bag about this place, since I want to come back, but thought you should know about what a great place this is.
We visited Eleuthera in 1988, and had brought our children who were 4 years and 7 years old back then. We had always favored Eleuthera over all the other places we had vacationed. . We wanted to bring our children as adults (with their spouses) to experience the same. Our experience surpassed our earlier visit.
The houses had all of the amenities. The beach was beautiful and very private.
The snorkeling was fantastic, with all of the various reefs close by. When it was too breezy on the Atlantic Side, we zipped over to the Carribean coast. We had fresh fish for dinner several nights.
The SUV was a great, which enabled us to shop and sightsee at the nearby two towns, where we could buy our supplies, fresh fruits and vegetables. The Govenor's Harbor Fish Fry was very "Bahamian", but you may want to stay clear of the "rum ba bas" . We even visited the local deli. Tippy's was great, good food and near the ocean.
Barbara, throughout the entire process has been very attentive and considerate. I have never met her, but would love to meet her in person!
My family of 6 stayed there Christmas week. The house is really comfortable and perfect for hanging out. The beach and water are gorgeous and very private. We saw about 5 people on the beach all week. The owner, Barbara, is very helpful, responsive and on top of things. We really had a wonderful time.
We enjoyed our stay very much, and were terribly sad to have to go home at the end of the week. We loved Eluethera very much! We have traveled to many islands in the Carribean, but loved this one because it is quiet (not many tourists and things to do, but relax and explore). The island is very safe, and the local people were friendly. The house was perfect for us, and we loved the beach. We didn't seen any people all week on the beach. Barbara was very helpful and responded quickly to our emails. The house was clean and well-maintained. The caretaker, Del Mingo, was a very wonderful man. He was super friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend this place to others. I love the fact that it was outside of town, and had a huge garden. My husband and I felt right at home. We drove around the whole island and didn't see many houses that compared to where we were staying. Many other houses were on rocky shores, and closer together.
We really liked Tippy's restaurant but it was pricey. We drove down to Rock Sound and stopped at Pascal's, and very much enjoyed our lunch. The prices were very cheap there, and the food was fantastic. Another day, we went to Harbor Island and stopped for lunch at Queen Conch. This place is a must! They had the best Conch fritters and Conch salad on the whole island (we tried the fritters at many places). The owner was super friendly and talked to us for a while.
We enjoyed the Friday night fish fry, and recommend to stay away from the Rum Bubbas......very potent. Even the locals tell you to only drink one!
What a terrific vacation. We stayed at Monticello using both houses (Garden of Light and Desert Rose) and could not have had a better time. The homes were wonderful and inviting and the caretaker could not have been nicer or more helpful. We actually were fortunate enough to spend some time with him duing the weekly fish fry in Governors. Both houses are right on beautiful Poponi Beach and I think we saw a grand total of 3 people other than ourselves the entire week.
The property is conveniently located less than 20 mins from GHB airport and 10 minutes from Governors Harbor itself. Also very nearby are Tippys, The Beach House, Banks Rd. Deli, as well as Unique Village. Not sure you could find a more convenient location to be able to visit all of Eleuthera during your stay. This was our 4th year visiting the island and was a wonderful trip for our family.
Additionally the houses are well appointed with comfortable rooms, nice kitchens, grills and all the things you need for a beach vacation, not to mention an SUV that comes with the house. I highly recommend this property for anyone who is interested.
It was our first trip to the island, and I hope it wont be our last. There was 3 couples in our party, and we all had a great time. Del the caretaker, was very helpful. When I needed to ask Del a question about anything on the island, all I have to do was to call him on the cell phone (provided by yhe owners). The house was perfect. We saw one, person on the beach all week. The house was very clean, and the owners gave excellent customer service..We shop in town for the things we needed. We also bought fish ffrom the side of the road. This island is nothing like nassas. The people was friendly at the fish fry,We visted a different beach each day. I also recommend on renting Barbara's Suv. Having one was a must for this vacation. Hight recommend this property
I can't say enough positive things about the house and island. They have everything you need to make it a pleasant stay. It was helpful to have items left over from others (bug spray, sunscreen, supplies, etc.) as well as a caretaker to provide help when necessary. Overall a spectacular time!
8 amazing days on this beautiful island. The house was great and had everything we needed in order to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. We were 2 families with young kids (two 1 year olds, 4 and 6 years old) and the house was very convenient for everything we needed to do. Amazing beach just below the house - we must have seen 5-6 people during our entire stay. The pictures on the website represent very well what the house really looks like and the beach is really fantastic (even though the ocean got really rough the last few days and even stole our kayak, which I luckily found later ½ mile away from the house). There are 2 bikes at the house – I took one of them a few times to take a 10 minutes ride to the nearby colorful village of North Palmetto where we would occasionally do some grocery shopping. I’m not much of a review writer, but would like to give some tips and short recommendations on thing we have done while being on the island – for beach lovers (especially if you have young kids) – please visit the Ten Bay beach (10-12 minutes drive from the “Garden of lights”) – amazing shallow beach (great for snorkeling as well); buy a Grouper from the local guy in Governor’s Harbour (he comes back after fishing around 2-3pm every day) and grill it on the BBQ (the most delicious fish I have ever eaten); visit the local Island farm – you can buy some fresh fruits and vegetables as well as very nice cheese; don’t miss the Friday night “Fish Fry” at Governor’s Harbor (if you’re without young kids you will have a lot of fun); take day trips to the islands of Spanish Wells and Harbour Island (about an hour drive away from the house) – take the water taxi and then rent a golf card to walk around the Island – this was amazing fun; visit the Tippy’s Point restaurant (less then 2 miles from the house – you can even walk on the beach and get to it) for dinner (make a phone call for reservation – it is safer) . Great island, hospitable people, peaceful heaven – anyone who has a chance to visit will love it. And at the end a few words about the owner Barbara – she is the most responsive and nice person I’ve ever dealt with – never got to speak to her on the phone, but every time I sent her an e-mail she has responded within a few hours. She has explained us in details everything we needed to know and it was a pure pleasure to communicate with her. I would highly recommend this beautiful house to anyone that is seeking tranquility and peace in the beautiful Bahamas
Barbara (owner) and David (Caretaker) were very helpful and responsive. DEFINITELY rent the car from Barbara. Cars on the island are not in good shape. Also, would recommend charging up cell just in case. Nice people everywhere. Favorite meal was "The Front Porch." Just read the reviews. The pictures and reviews for Monticello are accurate and the beaches are beautiful and quiet. If you are looking for a relaxing and beautiful vacation this is for you. Don't expect any late night activity or clubbing in GHB though. The meals are quite expensive but that's to be expected. If you'd like to save money on eating go local. "The Bakery" is to-go donuts/pasties that are cheap and delicious. "Burrows" is the better grocery store to go to down the road from the gas station, and "Ronnies" is a local bar with the owner Mark being a hoot! Safe everywhere. THANKS!
Not the first time I stayed there, so no surprises, but as always a terrific house in a terrific location near GH, and a really nice and private beach. Would definitely stay again.
We stayed in the Garden of Light condo and it was our first experience with this type of vacation arrangement and we loved it. The condo is close to everything and in the end we liked our own beach the best of all we went to. If it's peace and tranquility your after, then this would be a great option...... The owner was very easy to deal with and professional. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this property to anyone thinking about going to Eleuthera.
This location is perfect! We've been to Eleuthera before, but this was the best location yet! The beach behind the house was incredible. The sand was a beautiful pink and looks just like is pictured in the listing. During low tide, the snorkeling to the nearby reefs was awesome with our small children.
The house is close to Tippy's, the Banks Rd Deli, and other stores in Governor's Harbor. The house also is well stocked with snorkeling supplies, a cooler, beach chairs, plenty of towels, and other beach necessities.
We can't wait to visit again, and highly recommend this property!
We had a wonderful stay at Monticello! I came with my husband, 2.5 year old son, brother-in-law, and 6-year-old nephew. I was worried initially about how kid friendly it was going to be but it was perfect. Lots of sand toys - pails, snorkels, bocce balls, floaties, beach chairs, boogie board,... tennis & badminton rackets, bicycles... Unfortunately the kayaks had blown away in a wind storm before we arrived so we rented from a local guy that Barbara had recommended and had a great day visiting the cays off North Palmetto beach.
Clean. Lots of towels. Washer & dryer. Well equipped kitchen. Lots of fans - we didn't need to use the AC because it cooled off a fair bit at night. Lots of lounging areas around the property - my favourite was the comfy couch on the back deck!
We rented a minivan from BigE's car rental which was great - didn't test it out on the lighthouse beach road but otherwise even some of the bumpy roads were fine! They met us at the airport and guided us to the property which was very helpful after a long journey getting there to begin with.
Kelly - the manager - was very helpful. Booked us a reservation at the nearest restaurant - Tippy's for our first night which was great. Offered to buy groceries before our arrival and book a private chef.
Our favourite spots were the Bank Road Deli - great cold cuts, cheeses, sandwiches, croissants and coffee!!; The local nature preserve was beautiful and fun; Ten Bay Beach; Governor's Habour friday night fish fry; the Ocean Hole; The Beach House Restaurant...
Felt very safe at the property and on the island in general.
Barbara was most helpful with setting up our stay. Would recommend to anyone! Hope to be able to come back again one day. Thank you for sharing your place!
My husband, me, and our 3 year old son had a lovely week here. The beach is incredibly private (most of our walks of the stretch were alone), and on a beautiful slice of the atlantic coast, with gorgeous blue water and pretty cliffs. We happened to have a windy week, so it was pretty wavy and not the best swimming conditions for our son, but a calmer beach was only minutes away, and we also had fun exploring different beaches all over the island.
The house was clean, had a nice stock of beach towels, sand toys, and beach chairs. The caretaker and owners were very responsive.
It was a lovely, relaxing week. We hope to return in the future!
The house was perfect for our needs and the beach was breathtaking. I had my morning coffee on the beach every morning and wine every night. I think I saw 5 people on the beach the entire stay. Super secluded and the house had everything you need..beach toys, a BBQ, even umbrellas for rainy occasions. If you visit be sure to rent a car, you will need it to drive into town or do any activities on the island. Everything is farther than we realized. However, Barbara recommended a great company that gave us a little SUV. All and all we were very impressed and can't wait to go back. Barbara was really easy to work with and made everything so easy!
This was our 5th stay at Monticello - Garden of Light. We love staying there and this trip was another reminder of why it is so near and dear to us. Our caretaker Mrs. Clarke welcomed us with open arms upon our arrival and from there we had another awesome week in our favorite place on Earth, the beautiful island of Eleuthera.
The house is perfectly located to see all of the island from the north, all the way down to Lighthouse beach. Just minutes from Tippys and Governors Harbor there is plenty to keep us fed and well stocked for the trip, including Baccus fine foods, a great new addition to the island.
We loved starting our days on our very own beach, Poponi Beach, where I don't think we saw more than 3 people for a mile in either direction for the entire week. It was a great place to either start the day with a walk or swim or finish the day or even evening out with a cool beverage.
We loved the flexibility of the house to comfortably fit my wife and I and our 2 teenage kids, and later in the week another couple of friends joined us for the last few days of our stay. We fit perfectly in the house, as it is well equipped to handle as many as 6 people comfortably.
We enjoyed putting the grill to work after another great fishing trip with Tweedy out of Spanish Wells, where we hauled in several good sized tuna.
I can't say enough about how much we love Eleuthera and how well Garden of Light suits our needs for each of our trips. We love staying there as it provides everything you could want on a vacation; a beuatiful beach, privacy, and a well equipped house to let you enjoy your stay. We can't wait to come back.
Our family trip to Eleuthera was truly magnificent. Monticello was perfect for our family of four including two teenage daughters - it was big enough to allow our girls to have some space and independence. The proximity to the beach was a major highlight. My husband and I walked along the pristine beach every day all the way to a popular restaurant, Tippy's, and back - probably about 5-7 kms. We also spent time daily sitting on the back deck, and the kitchen and dining area was perfectly set up for meals eaten in.
Monticello is in an ideal location allowing frequent short drives into Governor's Harbour. We found great places to buy food nearby to cook ourselves, including Island Farm, Banks Road Deli, and a grocery store in Governor's Harbour. We also enjoyed the delicious food at nearby restaurants, with Tippy's being our favourite. We attended the Anchor Bay Fish Fry, attended by both locals and visitors.
One highlight was a day-trip to Lighthouse Point at the southern tip of Eleuthera where the Atlantic and Caribbean meet. Another was an afternoon spent on the beach at Monticello where our girls actually played at length with a dolphin that swam in to entertain us and our beach neighbours.
We can't wait to return!
This was our first trip to Eleuthera. We found the island to be very beautiful with lush greenery and beautiful ocean views! We also found the islanders to be very friendly and helpful. Marcia, the property manager was there to greet us on arrival and was very friendly, helpful and able to answer any questions we had. We stayed in the Monticello house for 11 days and our friends stayed at Dessert Rose for 8. The house is in a great location on the island, close enough to grocery stores and dining at Tippy’s or the Buccaneer. The well groomed gardens on the property were really enjoyable and relaxing. The beach was very clean with beautiful white sand and it was private. We especially loved the two cabanas right on the beach for us to spend our days. The house had all the amenities that we needed to cook in as well as plenty of place to relax and eat outdoors. If you are looking for luxurious accommodations, this is not it; however, we found it to be clean, comfortable and an enjoyable stay!
We stayed at the larger property, further back from the beach. There are two cottages on this property, each has independent beach access and is well equipped for your stay. The smaller unit has an older vibe and better porches with beach views and a hammock. The larger unit has a gazebo in the garden. Beach is open and basically uninhabited.
Big benefits include: excellent AC for the nights and evenings - well equipped kitchen, good bbq access - lots of beach chairs and stray floaties etc - really beautiful bedspreads and nice sheets - the beach and water are fabulous, clear waters, interesting walks, snorkelable fishies, you can walk along the beach to Tippy's for a meal or drinks, and there are minor grocery spots along Banks road.
In Governor's Harbour are two grocery spots - we are loyal to Burrows whose owners we met - the Friday fish fry has great food (and lots of flies), ice for sale in town and decent restaurants for coffee (Da Perk) and food (Buccaneer etc). We did not go out for fancy dining - so I cannot comment on those spots. Remember to get cash. Everything needs cash, with USD exchangeable 1 to 1 to local currency.
The road access to the cottages is barely marked and pretty darn rough, but the main roads are good and there are sites to visit if you are the adventurous type. Use the GH airport, the others are a long road trip away.
Really amazing welcoming and engaged community of people in and around Governors Harbour.
Next time I think we will go for the smaller unit, but we would really enjoy bringing enough people to fill the two units and engage the whole property. It was a great relaxing vacation. SUV or 4-wheel necessary.
We stayed at this property over New Years. We have stayed at many vrbo properties throughout the world, and I can honestly say it is the best we have found. We stayed at Desert Rose facing the Atlantic and the beach was perfect. We explored many beaches in Eleuthera and our backyard view was our favorite. The home was ideal for our family of five and we were lucky enough to meet the property owners who were first class in every way. They went above and beyond to ensure our stay perfect. We can’t say enough good things about the privacy and beauty of this property. We will refer all our friends and family! Thank you for the wonderful memories!
lovely property--well situate with easy access to many of the beaches
only downside is having the noseeums around at dusk making it difficult to sit outside for that sundowner
This was the best vacation ever! The house itself was perfect for our needs--we have three in our family, but the house could sleep 6. We found the kitchen to be well-stocked, the gas grill very handy (along with the fish baskets to grill the catch of the day), and the beach to be amazing. The island is a slice of paradise. We went exploring and found new beaches almost every day. When we didn't want to go anywhere, we had the beach behind the house to enjoy the day--a perfect tiki hut to provide shade, plenty of rocks and things to explore when snorkeling, and soft pink sand to luxuriate in. Another bonus--very few people on any beach, so you feel like the beach is yours!!! The two weeks we were there did not give us enough time to do all the things we wanted to do, so we will be forced to come back!!! We cooked in and we ate out. Groceries were found at Burrow's and Eleuthera Supply (both in the Harbour), another great grocery store called Midway (Queen's Hwy near Savannah Sound), and a huge grocery store (the real deal) in Rock Sound. Buy your fresh produce at the Island Farms, along with fresh bread and cinnamon buns. Bristol's Liquor Store in GH for good wine and spirits. We enjoyed Buccaneer Club, Tippy's, and Bacchus Fine Foods for eating out. You really can't go wrong. Everyone is friendly and helpful. Andre, the caretaker, was also very helpful by meeting us coming in from the airport, replacing the gas tank for the grill, and even buying fresh fish for me one day when I couldn't. He called several times just to check in and make sure everything was going smoothly. All in all, the perfect vacation! Thank you, Barbara and Luciano!
We spent 6 nights at Garden of Light end of April through early May. We flew into North Eleuthera airport and were picked up by the property's caretaker Mr. Gardiner and his son. We rented an SUV through Mr. Gardiner as well which was very easy. The property is secluded on the Atlantic side; there are two houses on the property although there are enough palm trees, foliage, and distance to where there house is very private. The beach was beautiful and the house was well equipped with beach chairs, snorkel gear, grill and all the kitchen amenities needed to cook well at home. There was AC in the house which worked well although it was rarely needed as it was easy to get a breeze through the house. Wifi was very reliable in the house. We were able to pick up fresh fish in Governor's Harbor (sold next to the water across the street from Eleuthera Supply) to grill at home (catch is variable, had grouper and crab available). Groceries at Burrows, veggies/fresh bread/cinnamon rolls at Island Farm Eleuthera (just south of South Palmetto Point). Island Farm also sells a nice map of the island (4 separate maps for different areas) which was nice to have. It was quite windy on the Atlantic side for most of our trip (which meant essentially no noseeums). Wouldn't hesitate to come back!
This was our first visit to Eleuthera, and we feel very fortunate to have discovered this wonderful property and location. A very short walk to a gorgeous, secluded beach where every sunrise walk was a fresh delight. Barbara was very helpful and responsive making arrangements and providing information about the island. The caretaker, Mr. Gardiner, was also responsive and solicitous, providing us with a car rental that simplified coordinating details for our trip. The house was very accommodating, with a gazebo in the front garden where we could retreat from the midday sun, read and share with the native curly tailed lizards. Very secluded yet close to the amenities and fresh fish in Governors Harbor and fresh produce at Island Farms. We lost power occasionally but not for long enough to create any hardship. Overall, we were enchanted and are looking forward to staying here again.
Barbara was very responsive to any questions. Andre was fantastic, met us in town and guided us to the house as it was late when we arrived. Excellent communication! Would stay again if we go back to Bahamas.
